Research
The Lightcone Institute aims to pursue research on those questions that are the most relevant to our society - fundamental questions of nature as well as the connections between politics, sociology, economics and the natural sciences. Also, the social dynamics of research itself is a new and important subject of scientific study. In a rapidly growing, global scientific community it is crucial to understand how science works, how progress can be optimized, how resources can be used most efficiently, and how science can best be communicated to the public and integrated into our lives.

The Lightcone Institute is build on these four pillars:
  1. Researching Research
Aimed at examining under which conditions scientific progress can be optimized, this research area draws on the sociology of science, scientometric, decision science, institutional design and knowledge management

  2. Interdisciplinary Research
Between natural and social sciences, dedicated to the challenges mankind is facing in the 21st century.

  3. Basic Research
Study of the fundamental concepts to foster understanding of the building blocks our research is based upon.

  4. Public Outreach
Active communication of our research endeavors to other institutions and organizations, as well as to the public.
