The last decade has brought us many changes due to
tremendously increased connectivity, facilitated by the Internet
and its more recent interactive trends often called the “Web 2.0”.
These changes have had a profound impact on science. The open access
movement, as well as new possibilities for information sharing and
collaboration become more and more integrated into the every day
organization of scientific research.
Software tools, as well as online social networking sites offer vast
opportunities to improve the management of scientific knowledge and
information, as well as its communication to the public. Both for the
internal and the external organization of scientific research, Web 2.0
applications can catalyze progress by making the use of available knowledge
more efficient - may that be for finding experts or building and maintaining
collaborations.
At the Lightcone Institute, we will investigate the potential of
these applications, and actively support their development.
